Summer heat...when I think about the heat of summer I always think about the summers that I spent growing up in Dallas. The Dallas heat is dry and desert-like and when you would feel the wind blow, it would burn your skin. My inspiration for this skirt came to me when I was in Dallas in February and came across this photo of the Alto Atacama Desert Lodge. The way the sun shone through the wooden slats of the roof gave me the idea of "burning" this look into this skirt. The warm orange color of the skirt reminded me of sand and clay, and the cotton gauze fabric is perfect to wear on hot summer days. I smocked the waist of the skirt and added fullness so it would drape beautifully around your body. I also added pockets so it became more functional to wear. After I stitched the skirt I carefully "burned" the decorative detailing into the hem by hand using a paint brush. I enjoyed making this skirt and I hope you all like it!
